A drawing-based situation focused on the acquisition of a graphic language and on the discovery of new meanings through diagrammatic form. The contribution takes the form of a short workshop that models this situation. Participants receive an envelope containing simple tasks and a drawing tool; they first work individually and then in pairs, engaging in a dialogic mode. We test a prototype of signs previously explored in a community workshop, where drawing functions as a mode of relating. Participants take on the role of “significant others” and develop sensitivity to reciprocal visual signals under conditions of limited verbal articulation. We examine our trust in unspeakable graphic signs and explore how drawing framed in this way can function as a model situation for introducing visual language into lived experience—opening a space for what has yet to emerge.
