one hundred notes on the image of the family
Each time you open it, the family rearranges itself.
The method: a forensic gaze at the family – it sounds technocratic, “data-driven,” like an internal research project. In truth, it is something intimate and elusive: a record of all different qualities, shapes, aspects, and relations one might summon under the word family.
Duration/intensity: one minute, two seconds per drawing.
Output: fleeting sketches, incomplete ciphers, attempts at capture, at holding, at making visible.
To see the family as:
something with a core
a presence that accompanies, but does not guide
eyes gazing over our shoulder
an old-new form of hope
something that sees through itself
something that reincarnates
a voice that never stops speaking
a thing that grows
fractured, discontinuous
folding into itself
non-transferable
not born in the womb, but in the mind
a borderland, a crossing of seas
humming inside
—
we breathe on its behalf
like the head of a horse
a vessel (full–empty)
the one above
when it is five in number
when everything circles around it
—
as if it were holy
the strength and direction of fibers (swept into patterns)
related phenomena
genetics
the (im)possibilities of unfolding
an organic square
under control
an app no one can command
the permissible degree of sentiment
a state of inner excitation (energy heightened)
does it do what it should?
occasional asymmetry of needs
a morphogenetic field
axes of imbalance
a source of support
the only one
little squares too close together
the measure of disorder (a system)
does it really hold together?
an expeditionary landing
the soil it grows from
its front-to-back projection
co-existence (before–after–beyond)

holding
a gearbox, a central unit
said to be a model
like a single package
a reasonable composition – parental control
herd – flock – swarm – pack
one of the worlds
a linguistic habitat
heating up!
a turbine
a field of interest/disinterest
lineage
profiles
intersections
ribbing, a shield
not a bubble, but inside a bubble
a blind map
micro-fusions
may it not be what I fear
an embrace, wanted/unwanted
together in this
a usable model
a firm supporting structure
charger, accumulator, breaker, conductor, transmitter – the source of what?
he – she – it – they – they – she (she prevails!)
full–empty
a subworld
—
force lines, blurred contours
nothing, between, everything, everywhere
a network of tender points
ouch
a tree diagram
structure
crossings … what never surfaces … a residential palace
—
escape from the concept (nest)
unpleasant patterns (shared)
accumulation of rights and obligations
a baking dish of food
modes of connection – factual, material, fleeting, permanent, logical, practical, impulsive, static
a decision-tree shaped by surrounding influences
the hand that keeps it together
it may not succeed
it cannot be just anything
a narrowed gaze
matter in-between
performance
a single shared cell
already known
missing pieces

bonds

Aristotelian logic (what?)
a constellation

a priori (tedium)
its image

harvest
selfless love
could it be otherwise?
a tangled story
it could be tidied up
we want it beautiful
the problem is: by the time I catch it, it’s gone. Yet it beats.
cipher – signal – connection
each new moment, we no longer know together
