We probably never learned how to communicate through drawing — through simple lines and their reading. It is a primary ability to translate information into shorthand, into a compressed format. Spontaneous expression, uncertain searching, indisputable simple signs, as well as carefully considered strokes, all interact to create a certain comprehensible network. To what extent can such a “straightforward” form of expression serve as a unifying means of communication, and how comfortable do we feel when looking at linearly transformed thoughts? The artists presented on these pages may not be directly concerned with these questions, yet the new edition should offer several distinctive approaches to drawing.

Answer to My Daughter, drawing, serigraphy, 2017
My daughter writes me letters. She doesn’t know how to write yet. She draws the script — freely, with focus, in her own language. I don’t understand her. Will it help if I make her script my own?
